The combined meeting for Te Puke Rotary and Federated Farmers of Te
Puke on Monday night was a huge success. Giles the new president of Te Puke Rotary opened the event in his usual charismatic way. He
then proceeded to present Pamela Clark, and Rosalie Angell badges for their hard work and service to the club.
The night started with a three minute speech from John Montgomery on his and his wife’s travels of recent. Some of the highlights were visiting the Gisborne region for floral and business interest. Following on, the fines were dished out to all members of both clubs. No one was spared!
The guest speaker for the night was Rob Fraser, member of the Te Puke rotary club and also park ranger at the Papamoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park. Rob had an interesting and informative slide presentation set out about the Maori history on the Pa site dating back some 600 years and more. He explained the route that the ancient
ancestors would have taken to eventually arrive on the shores of New Zealand. The Pa at the top of the park was a large and thriving community at various times in history. Even today you can quite clearly see the formation in the landscape of where the trenches, sleeping huts and kumara pits were.
Robs primary role is to preserve the landscape of the park and to educate the public on the cultural history and significance of the Papamoa Hills.
On conclusion of Rob’s speech dinner was served. And by the hungry apatite of all in the room, was well enjoyed.
Rotary would like to extend a thank you to all members of both clubs who dedicated their time and energy to make the night a success.
