The combined meeting for Te Puke Rotary and Federated Farmers of Te
Puke on Monday night was a huge success. Giles the new president of Te Puke Rotary opened the event in his usual charismatic way.  He
then proceeded to present Pamela Clark, and Rosalie Angell badges for their hard work and service to the club.

The night started with a three minute speech from John Montgomery on  his and his wife’s travels of recent. Some of the highlights were visiting the Gisborne region for floral and business interest.  Following on, the fines were dished out to all members of both clubs. No one was spared!

The guest speaker for the night was Rob Fraser, member of the Te Puke rotary club and also park ranger at the Papamoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park.  Rob had an interesting and informative slide presentation set out about the Maori history on the Pa site dating back some 600 years and more. He explained the route that the ancient
ancestors would have taken to eventually arrive on the shores of New Zealand. The Pa at the top of the park was a large and thriving community at various times in history.  Even today you can quite clearly see the formation in the landscape of where the trenches, sleeping huts and kumara pits were.

Robs primary role is to preserve the landscape of the park and to educate the public on the cultural history and significance of the Papamoa Hills.

On conclusion of Rob’s speech dinner was served. And by the hungry apatite of all in the room, was well enjoyed.

Rotary would like to extend a thank you to all members of both clubs  who dedicated their time and energy to make the night a success.

Giles Day and District Governor Roger Millar Handover
First and foremost, we would like to pay tribute to the passing of our president Ray Singleton. His dedication and contribution to the club over the many years will be sadly missed. He is a well respected and liked member of the Te Puke community. May he rest in peace.

Due to the unfortunate  timing of Rays passing, the hand over of leadership happened sooner than  anticipated.  On Tuesday the 2nd April  2013 the Te Puke Rotary Club welcomed Giles
Day as the new president. A  special thank  you to Roger Miller, District Governor D9930 for formally  handing over the
Chain of Office to Giles at the impromptu ceremony.

Giles then presented an  inspiring presentation on the year ahead for
the club.  Smaller groups then discussed what should  be kept, what should be stopped, and suggestions for the club in the year to  come.
Suggestions are always welcomed  by Giles so any member should
feel free to approach him at anytime for  what-ever reason.

Lila Rapley, Mr.Cunliffe, & Student.
This week the Te Puke Rotary Club handed over dictionaries at Te Puke Primary school. Members Jim Clark, Giles Day, David Angell, Gretchen Earl, Lila Rapley and Noah Thompson from the club attended and signed the children’s names in the cover of each books. Lead into the gymnasium by the Principal Shane Cunliffe, the students were handed a dictionary each. The class of students were then asked to find a word that always confused Mr. Cunliffe, the word was “necessary”. One of the hands of a student shot up faster than lightning with the page number of the word.  All of the kids in the room were excited  about the new books. For me and the other members, this was a very rewarding experience to share with the kids. You could instantly see that these donated books will have a definite impact on the reading, spelling and knowledge for the kids.  We would like to thank Te Puke Primary and Mr. Cunliffe for their hospitality towards the club during the day.
